Aidonis watches basketball while Athens burns (article translation)

There are crowds and blocs, protests and riots in the street; a cinema, a bank, and many shops have burned. Greek police have run out of tear gas and had to order more. Now tear gas can be tasted inside parliament. Yet Greek MP Eva Kaili has had to bollock her colleagues for watching basketball instead of taking part in the debate on the memorandum that will decide if Greece suffers further austerity measures and serfdom, or bankruptcy and collapse.(1)

This is a translation of the report on Pandora’s Box:

An incident was caused in the lounge of parliament when, entering the room, MP Eva Kaili found that her colleagues had abandoned the chamber of parliament and the debate on the memorandum and were watching the match between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos on TV. The MP stood in front of the television and asked them to return to the chamber and respect the [historic] moment. Some MPs jokingly protested and in the end launched a verbal attack.

The [left-wing] PASOK MP [Kaili] said: ‘Out there is chaos/doom and in here you watch basketball? Aren’t you ashamed?’ [Nikos] Tsonis and [Christos] Aidonis protested. Indeed, while most of them got up and went back to the chamber, Aidonis told her, ‘wind your neck in and leave us be’.(2)

1: I first reported it as a football match; it was a basketball game.
