There is no evidence yet that the Shrine of al-Imam Abd al-Rahman (Mosul, Iraq) has been destroyed (2nd September 2014)

Miroslav Melčák, Karel Nováček, Zuzana Říhová, Lenka Starková and others(?) are coordinating an international initiative to systematically document Mosul’s cultural property. Other members include the tireless Gilgamesh Nabeel. They are building a database (which records the name of the structure, other notes, historical documentation, the state of the site after any claimed attack, and the sources for the claim of the attack), in order to help conservation and research.

This is the first of five posts that are based on the efforts of the team for Monuments of Mosul in Danger. So far, there is no secure evidence of the destruction of the Shrine of al-Imám Abd al-Rahman. However, I share Nováček’s pessimism that there probably is a ‘renewed wave of Mosul demolitions’.
