At the seminar on archaeology in occupied territories and in zones of armed conflict, a Senior Researcher at the V. M. Koretsky Institute of State and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Alexander Malyshev or Oleksandr Malyshev (Олександр Малишев) considered international law and ‘bloody antiquities’: New challenges and perspectives.
As noted in the introduction to the posts on the seminar, the seminar highlighted that Ukraine should accede to the 1999 Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. As the organising Association of Archaeologists of Ukraine (Спілка археологів України) noted in its summary of Malyshev’s presentation,
Alexander Malyshev [explained] the strengths and weaknesses of international and Ukrainian legislation in the field of protection of cultural heritage in zones of armed conflict, the urgent need for ratification of the Second Protocol to the Hague Convention, the completion of the ratification of the Nicosia Convention, the weak position of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, [and] the importance of the state’s attention to the value and potential of cultural assets in international politics.
