UN maps devastation of Syria’s cities

Hyperallergic have published my post on the UN maps of the devastation of Syria’s cities, which show the harm to its civilian property, its communities’ neighbourhoods. First, those responsible for the war crimes of reckless destruction of civilian property and the crimes against humanity of targeted destruction of cultural and community property should be identified and prosecuted. Second, it’s been more than a month since my fisking of Robert Fisk on the destruction of the Armenian Genocide Memorial Church in Deir Ezzor. But there hasn’t been any response. The Independent hasn’t even corrected the date of Armenian Genocide memorial day.

Who destroyed the Armenian Genocide Martyrs’ Memorial Church in Deir Ezzor?

Hyperallergic have published my fisking of, well, Fisk. ‘Fifty days after the destruction of the Armenian Genocide Martyrs’ Memorial Church in Deir Ezzor, Robert Fisk has reported it, but his report is riddled with peculiarities, mistakes, contradictions and historical inconsistencies….’

The centrepiece of Fisk’s report is his apparent scoop that the al-Nusra Front, ‘Jabhat al-Nusra [JaN] rebels appear to have been the culprits‘. Drawing on my initial verification and reaffirmation of the attack, and further research into the circumstances at the time of the attack, I conclude that it is ‘possible, and intriguing, that the agents who implemented the attack may have been subjugated former Jabhat al-Nusra fighters who served under the flag of the Islamic State’.

There is a lot wrong with Robert Fisk’s report on the destruction of the Armenian Genocide Martyrs’ Memorial Church

There is a lot wrong with Robert Fisk’s seven-week-late report that Jabhat al-Nusra blows up Armenian church in Deir el-Zour: A savage blow that echoes through Armenian history, including the date of the commemoration of the genocide and contradictions between his story this year and his story last year, grimly concerning his digging up of genocide victims’ bones (despite their delivery to the memorial church). Even the central point of the article – Jabhat al-Nusra’s responsibility – does not appear to be correct. I’m working on a complete report.

There is only one thing worse than not being read, and that is being read (by AQIS and ISIS)

Within hours of me showing that the Armenian Genocide Memorial Church in Deir ez-Zor had been destroyed by the Islamic State (or factions within the Islamic State) @conflictantiq, the comparison image had been appropriated by abualtidore @abualtidore: ‘[the] Armenian Church in #DeirEzzor [has been] destroyed by #USA Coalition Airstrikes’. (Since then, his account has been suspended.) Others spread that line, including accounts associated with Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and the Islamic State itself.

ISIS have destroyed the Armenian Genocide Memorial Church in Deir ez-Zor

I’m on the road at the moment, but I haven’t been able to outrun the bad news. I first heard claims that the Armenian Genocide Memorial Church had been destroyed through the Antiquities Coalition (@CombatLooting); then, while I was querying the unevidenced report and debunking community activists’ fabricated evidence, JP (@AgenerationXer) sent me the evidence that corroborated the claims.
